No matter how tough you think your life is there’s always someone who has to face challenges that are even tougher than yours. We believe that we should do what we can to support those people, be it a friendly voice down the phone or some kind of financial support. At Grace we are making a conscious effort to give back to our community in as many ways as we can.
So why are we telling you this? We don’t want accolades or pats on the back, we want you to help where you can, support our ventures or do something yourself.
Do we get anything out of it? Absolutely, a sense of pride and a smile on our face, that is enough.
We provide our support in the following ways:
Christmas cards: We have for a long time made an annual donation to a registered charity instead of buying Christmas cards. The charity is chosen each year by the staff.
Military Veterans: For some years we have provide free legal advice to a military support organisation and its members. Our diggers support our Country and its way of life and we believe that whatever we do is never enough for their sacrifice but we do what we can when we can.
Smith family: In 2016, we partnered with The Smith Family to sponsor two primary school students through the ‘Learning for Life’ program. This program aims to provide disadvantaged children with the opportunity and tools required to obtain an education (including books, clothing and essentials for their school life). We also buy presents for birthdays and Christmas to give a little boost. We chose to take part in this program because we believe every child is entitled to an education. It is our belief that an education can be a vital factor in breaking the poverty cycle.
The Animal Welfare League: In 2017 we partnered with two branches of The Animal Welfare League (New South Wales and Queensland). Our donations have gone towards sponsoring a kennel and cattery for abandoned, surrendered and neglected animals awaiting their forever homes.
Winter Appeals: Starting in 2016 we instigated our own “winter appeal” and asked staff to donate blankets, towels and sheets to be used at the shelters to keep the animals warm and dry throughout the colder months.
Cancer Council 7 Bridges Walk: On 31 October 2016 a team of 11 people, including 9 dedicated Grace Lawyers’ staff members, participated in the walk around the gorgeous Sydney harbour and raised money for the Cancer Council.
Queensland Legal Walk: On Tuesday 16, May 2017 our Queensland staff completed a chariy walk to raise funds for Lawright, a not-for-profit organisation that coordinates the provision of pro bono legal services in Queensland.
Pro Bono work: We are developing a Grace Lawyers Pro Bono Policy through which our talented lawyers will be encouraged to provide pro bono legal assistance, in partnership with Community Legal Centres and the Law Society of NSW, to vulnerable members of our community.
Help where you can
In his Nobel Peace Prize address, The Problem of Peace in the World Today, Albert Schweitzer said,
“The human spirit is not dead. It lives on in secret.....It has come to believe that compassion, in which all ethics must take root, can only attain its full breadth and depth if it embraces all living creatures and does not limit itself to mankind.”
All we ask is that you support what we do where you can, think about doing something yourself and ask if you need anything from us no matter how small or large.
